Premium AI voices are optional. You can add your own voice-API key — ElevenLabs and others — and pay that provider directly, at their prices, with no markup from us.

Articles and any web page, PDFs, Google Docs, Word files, Kindle and Google Play Books, EPUB, email, and any text you select on a page. The rule of thumb: if you can read it in Chrome, it can read it to you.

Yes — with bookmarks, contents and progress, the same as a book. You may find older reviews on the Chrome Web Store saying PDFs are not supported. Those are about an earlier version and are out of date.

No. Reading works with no sign-up at all. An account exists only to sync your shelf, bookmarks and quotes between computers, so a book you started on one machine carries on where you left it. You can sign in with Google, or with a magic link sent to any email address.

You can pick a voice that runs on your device — those are marked in the voice list, and then the text never leaves your computer. The Google voices are spoken on Google servers, the way browser speech normally works.

Yes, on Chromium-based browsers. One caveat worth knowing: the built-in “Google” voices only exist inside Chrome itself. On other Chromium browsers the extension notices this and switches you to a voice that is actually available, rather than playing silence.

No. Read It To Me is a Chrome extension for the desktop. On a phone it will not work. We would rather tell you now than waste your time.

Pick a voice that runs on your device and it keeps working without a connection. The Google voices, translation and cloud AI voices need the internet.
