Read It To Me (“the extension”, “we”) is a text to speech reader for the Chrome browser. This policy explains what data the extension handles and what we do — and don’t — collect. In short: the extension works without an account and we do not sell your data. If you choose to sign in, a small amount of reading data is synced to our servers, as described below.

What the extension does with your text

When you ask the extension to read something, it reads the text of the page, document, or selection you chose and turns it into speech. With the built-in browser voices, this conversion happens locally on your device — the text is not sent to us and is not stored on our servers.

Network voices

Some voices are generated on your device (the browser’s built-in voices) — with these, the text never leaves your device. Other voices are generated over the network: when you pick a network voice, the text you asked to be read is sent to the voice provider (for example, Google’s text-to-speech service, or a provider you connect with your own API key) only to produce the audio. We do not store that text on our servers.

AI summaries (optional)

The extension can produce a short retelling of what you are reading and then read it aloud. This happens only when you press the Summary button — nothing is summarised automatically, and no page text is sent anywhere while you simply read or listen.

When you press it, the text you are currently reading is sent to our own server, where a language model hosted by Cloudflare — our infrastructure provider — writes the summary and returns it. The text is not sent to Google, OpenAI or any other AI company. Cloudflare states that it does not use customer content to train any AI model and does not make it available to other customers. We do not store the text either: our server passes it straight through and keeps only a count of how many summaries were made that day, so the feature cannot be abused. The summary is not saved — it exists only in your browser until you close it.

If you would prefer that no page text ever leaves your device, simply do not use this button. Everything else in the extension works exactly as before.

Settings and reading data stored on your device

Your preferences and reading data — such as chosen voice, speed, language settings, bookmarks and reading progress — are stored locally in your browser using Chrome’s storage. If you never sign in, this information stays on your device and is not transmitted to us.

Account and sync (optional)

Read It To Me works without an account. If you choose to sign in, we create an account tied to your email address and sync your reading data — your reading position, bookmarks and saved quotes — so you can pick up on any device. This data is stored on our behalf by Supabase, our data processor, on servers in the European Union. You can stop syncing at any time by signing out, and you can request deletion of your account data by emailing us. We do not sync the contents of the documents you read.

Your rights and data deletion

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal data associated with your account at any time by emailing us at hello@readittome.app. We will respond within 30 days. Signing out stops further syncing; deleting your account removes your email address, reading position, bookmarks and saved quotes from our servers.

Custom voice API keys (optional)

If you choose to connect your own voice provider (for example, by entering your own API key for a third-party text to speech service), that key is stored locally in your browser and is used only to send the text you want read to the provider you selected, so it can generate the audio. We do not receive your API key or the text you send to that provider. Your use of a third-party provider is also subject to that provider’s own privacy policy.

Browser permissions and why they’re used

The extension requests only the permissions it needs to read text aloud:

• Access to the current page — to read the text on the page you choose to listen to. Broad site access is optional and requested only when you grant it, so the extension can read pages as you browse.
• Text-to-speech — to convert text into spoken audio using the browser’s speech engine.
• Context menus — to add the “read selection” option to the right-click menu.
• Storage — to save your settings locally, as described above.
• Offscreen / side panel — to play audio and show playback controls without interrupting your browsing.
• Connection to readittome.app — to receive your sign-in session from our own website, if you choose to sign in for cross-device sync.

Analytics

We use aggregate, non-identifying usage statistics (such as total installs and active-user counts, provided through the Chrome Web Store and Google Analytics) to understand how the extension is used overall. This data does not build a profile of you and is not used to identify individual users.

Uninstall feedback (optional)

If you uninstall the extension, you may be shown a short “Before you go” form. If you choose to submit it, we receive only the information you voluntarily provide — the reason(s) you select, any comment you write, and an email address if you choose to include one. This is used to improve the product. Leaving the form blank sends us nothing.

Data we do not collect or sell

We do not sell or rent your personal data. We do not collect the content you read for our own use, and we do not track your browsing history for advertising. We do not collect health, financial, or location information, personal communications, or authentication passwords.

Our use of data received from Google APIs, and of any user data handled by the extension, adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We collect, use and transmit only the data needed for the extension's single purpose — reading text aloud — and never transfer it for advertising, credit scoring, or sale to data brokers, and never allow humans to read it, except for security, legal compliance, or with your explicit consent.

Children

Read It To Me is a general-purpose reading tool and is not directed to children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves — for example, if we add paid features that process text on our servers. Material changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
